In October of 2012, Sunright America (SRA) celebrated both its 10th anniversary and, to the delight of the local community, the grand opening of its expanded manufacturing operations.
“Local leaders have been extremely supportive of our local growth, and our decision to build near I-65 in the Woodside Industrial Park in Columbus, Indiana has served us very well,” says Toshiaki Takeuchi, Executive Vice President.
Sunright America incorporated in Indiana in 2002 and commenced production of weld nuts, flange nuts, stud bolts and other automotive fasteners in December of that year. Upon its launch, the company leased space from its minority owner and companion Japanese business, Rightway Fasteners. The company’s majority owner is Japan-based Sugiura Seisakusho. A little over five years later, SRA moved into its brand new 170,000 s.f. (4,777 tsubo) custom-built facility, and in July of 2009 earned its designation as a Toyota Motors Tier 1 supplier. The expansion of 2012 nearly doubled its footprint to 320,000 s.f. (9,000 tsubo) and is accommodating continued growth. Today, the company employs approximately 200 persons.
“Sunright America, like many of our other beloved Japanese companies, has found great success here in Columbus,” says Jason Hester, Executive Director of the Columbus Economic Development Board. “The company began with fewer than one dozen people just over ten years ago, and we’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to support steady job and investment growth by the company year after year.”
Sunright America is not the only Japanese business to find success in Columbus and Bartholomew County. NTN Driveshafts, Toyota Industrial Equipment Manufacturing, Enkei, Hisada, and several others join SRA and the aforementioned Rightway Fasteners to bring the total number of Japanese companies to 21, who collectively employ more than 4,800 persons.
